Day 1 of Half Marathon Training

All the information that I have seen advise a novice runner as myself to start out slow and steady to build stamina and endurance. I did my first three miles at a slow pace and felt very comfortable doing it without my heart rate going over 80%.

Looking towards the future.

Last October I lost my 39 year old sister and best friend Helen to a sudden massive stroke. Helen and are were as close as two sisters could be. We vacationed together with our families, shopped together and even conspired together on to outsmart out husbands which was hard since the four of us where inseparable.

My beautiful sister died one month after beginning one of her dreams which was to open a clothing store, which turned out incredible. Helen was an incredibly competitive and determined women who often got frustrated when I was better at spinning then she was, and it always pissed her off that I could actually run on the treadmill when she could not even last 2 minutes running. She always said she wished she could learn to run because it looked so liberating and everyone always looked like they felt so accomplished when they finished.

With this in mind on the 9 month anniversary of her passing I decided that I was going to run to help accomplish what she always wanted to do, and to help me look forward (as hard as it is) to what life has to offer going forward. I am fortunate that my husband Frank, daughter Alexis and my nephew Nick (that my husband and I are raising) fully support me and cheering me on. Wish me luck I start training tomorrow for my first ever half marathon.
